Life and its blessings are leased, not given in freehold possession. Ultimately, we own nothing. Not even our breath.
Loss and possession are two sides of the same worn coin. Every beautiful, cherished thing we get to hold onto comes with the fate of loss already written into its essence. This isn’t an opinion, but an honest and tragic truth of our ‘earthly staycation’.
We often indulge heavily in the pleasure of possession. We seek to acquire, to hold on, to cement the good things as if they never fade or depart. And then we foolishly build our identity around these possessions—not just the material ones, but the moments, the memories, around our finite relationships. We tell ourselves, “Because I have this, I am secure,” or “Because I am with them, I am happy.”
But the universe, it seems, conspires to dispossess us even before we realize.
When you meet someone who fills your world with light and love, the beauty of that connection is inseparable from the eventual, and inevitable final goodbye. It’s not a dark prophecy but a bitter reality we must confront.
Possession is both the antonym and synonym of Loss. We waste our energy trying to build dams around the things we love, only to realize that life ultimately overflows like water and cannot be contained.
Life and its blessings are leased, not given in freehold possession. Ultimately, we own nothing. Not even our breath.
