Geometry of Love: Finding Spiritual Symmetry Between the Circle and the Line

We revolve around His “signboards” like little ones circling a merry-go-round. We run between the hills, leaving behind the barren plains of logic.

There is an unusual beauty in the way the soul finds its home. We often spend our lives building fortresses of logic with cold “whys” and “hows,” demanding a rationale for our smiles and tears. But then comes the pilgrimage, a grand invitation to shed our ‘logic-adulterated’ adult skin and rediscover the child who once knew how to love without a checklist.

The Circle of the Beloved

When we enter the Haram and begin the Tawaf, we engage in an act that is no less than a love poem written by our footsteps. To revolve around the Kaaba is to surrender to the geometry of devotion.

In the Tawaf, we are not traveling toward a destination but revolving infinitely ourselves around a Presence. Just as a moth does not ask for the chemical properties of a flame, the pilgrim does not ask for an itinerary map. We simply turn, knowing well that the distance between a servant and their Creator is not a straight line, but a spin of the soul.

The Pulse of the Linear

Then, the rhythm shifts. We move to the Sa’ee, the journey between Safa and Marwa. This path mimics the frantic struggle of a mother seeking water for her child. Whereas she ran to quench the killing thirst of her son, we now rush to relieve the thirst of our souls. We insist on leaving no stone unturned in seeking the pleasure of our Lord.

Perhaps the greatest secret of the pilgrimage is that it is a homecoming to our own innocence. We shed our egos and titles, donning the simple white shroud of the beginner. We become children again.

We revolve around His “signboards” like little ones circling a merry-go-round. We run between the hills, leaving behind the barren plains of logic.

Reason may be a useful tool for the marketplace. But it robs the true joy of living acting as a spoiler for love and devotion. Does any mother look for a rationale to love her child? Surely not. The Divine does not demand our logical understanding of the unknown, but rather the simple acceptance and awareness of His grace.
