Sunnah: Love notes from Medina
Mawlid Nabi celebrates the 24/7 love of the Beloved Prophet, the most emulated soul to ever walk the earth— asserts
Praise be to Allah, peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah.
Today, I would like to share a very beneficial reflection with all of you. Some of you might have heard it before. But I share it for those who have not.
All of us are children of our parents. We have all entered this world through our mothers and fathers. In our faith, we generally hear about the virtues and greatness of the mother, and how Paradise lies beneath the feet of our mothers. That is a familiar reminder often shared. Undoubtedly, mothers deserve the utmost respect, honor and care from their children. In terms of love and respect, our mothers deserve the best. The Messenger of Allah has repeatedly emphasized this and it is highlighted in the Quran as well. As believers, we understand that after pleasing Allah, honoring and serving our mothers is a pathway to salvation.
Yet, there is another equally blessed connection worth reflecting upon in this gathering. When we send salaams and salawat to the Beloved Prophet, two names are mentioned when they are carried by the angels to the Rawdah Sharif. Firstly, the name of the sender, be it male or female, elder or youth. But along with that, the name of their father is also mentioned: ‘So-and-so’s son’ or ‘So-and-so’s daughter.’ That is how we are introduced there. In the blessed presence of the Messenger, our identity consists of our father’s name and our own. So, for all of our fathers out there, the salawat we send from here becomes an honor and reward for them, beautifully linking them with the Messenger.
In a sense, this spiritual gift is ‘couriered’ labeled with both our name and our father’s name. So, the more salawat we send, the more frequently our names and our fathers’ names are presented and introduced in the presence of the Holy Messenger. Therefore, the love we hold for our fathers finds a sacred bridge to the Messenger through salawat.
Inshallah, may Allah grant us the ability to present the salawat as a most worthy gift to the Messenger. And then, in gatherings like this, our voices, our words, and our moments together elevate into memorable mementos in our lives.
We often rehearse songs and poems with beautiful melodies. May Allah bless us with gatherings where the rhythm and melody of our lives align with the love and praise of the Messenger.
