Muslim male preachers who glorify the rights of mothers must also remember to elevate the status of the mothers of their sons and daughters too.
When the pulpit pundits speak of the ‘Mother’ in glowing terms, our mind often pictures the woman who raised us: our own mother. This respect is right and is commanded indeed. We learn to honor the memory and the sacrifice of the woman who brought us into the world.
But the simple truth is this: the woman raising your children (the spouse) is also a Mother. She deserves the exact same respect you preach about.
Words spoken from the pulpit must be practiced in the living room as well. If a man stands to praise the rights of mothers, yet deals harshly with the mother of his own children, his words lose their moral authority.
The preacher’s wife does not hold a lesser rank simply because she’s his spouse. The love, sacrifice, and tireless effort she pours into the family is the very ideal of the motherhood they honor.
In a spiritual sense, the love and gentleness shown to the mother of his children becomes a beautiful reflection of the love owed to his own mother. He is simply practicing the same high standard of kindness and grace on two equally deserving people.
The Holy Prophet taught, rather warned the men, to treat her gently, for she is not only your partner; she is a Mother under whose feet a different paradise blossoms for your children. She may also be their hope for a peaceful, loving home.
